March Tour – Southland to Northland

We’ve got the routes planned, we’ve found fun accommodation within walking distance of dinner each night, we’ve even supplied all the links to make booking really easy.

- Come for some or all of the week
- If you can’t ride with us, join us for dinner when we pass through your town
- Pick an alternate route or set off earlier or later than us to ride at your own pace if you prefer
- If you have a different budget or needs – go ahead and book accommodation that suits you best

From Colac Bay, Southland, to Tutukaka in Northland we’ve got an epic week planned!
We’re really happy with this route and the overnight stops – some good new places that we haven’t stayed before, and some old favourites too. We can’t wait to get on this trip!!

Riding Distance (approx): Kinda depends where you start from 
Notes: We’ve stayed here before, basic but good accommodation and a great pub!

Accommodation: The Camp at Lake Hawea follow the link to book online (get in quick for the cheap cabins!)

Dinner at: Either the Lake Hawea Hotel or the Hawea Store & Kitchen
Riding Distance (approx): 480km – about 6 hrs
Notes: Not only are there epic views across the lake from the camp, but the road north from here is possibly the best motorcycle road in the country!

Riding Distance (approx): 466km – about 6 hrs
Notes: Blackball has been a drawcard for bikers for years, so it’s about time we stayed there – we’ve been recommended the Blackball Inn and 08 Café so we’re looking forward to a ye olde hotel experience!

Riding Distance (approx): 350km – about 4.5 hrs
Notes: They seem to have finally?! finished the roadworks on the Takaka Hill so this will be a nice ride and hopefully get up to Farewell Spit to have a look too.

FERRY: Bluebridge Ferry 2pm crossing from Picton to Wellington

Riding Distance (approx): 238km – 3 hrs + FERRY + 75km – about 1 hr
Notes: This looks like a nice cruisy day – but there is the ferry crossing in the middle of the day so don’t be fooled! Get in quick to score a funky cabin at the camp ground (we got the Gypsy Caravan!) otherwise have another ye olde hotel experience at the Greytown Hotel!

Accommodation: LKNZ Lodge & Cafe, Ohakune – follow the link to book online
Alternative accomm options: Plenty of options around Ohakune, but the Top 10 campground is one of the best!
Dinner at: The Cyprus Tree
Riding Distance (approx): 421km – about 5.5 hrs
Notes: Know that if there is a direct route, we’ll normally avoid it – we’re going over the Gentle Annie from Taradale to Taihape today then the reward is dinner at the amazing Cyprus Tree restaurant.

Riding Distance (approx): 344km – about 4.5hrs
Notes: We’d always dismissed Raglan as being too touristy, but a friend took us down there last year and it’s pretty cool!

Riding Distance (approx): 371km – about 4.75hrs
Notes: We’re very happy to be finishing up in Tutukaka, it’s a great spot but we’ve never had chance to stay there before
